Toronto’s Summer McIntosh started her competition at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships with a silver medal in the women’s 200-meter freestyle in Irvine, California. The 19-year-old finished in second place with a time of 1:53.86, just behind Australia’s Lani Pallister, who set a championship record of 1:53.67. Erika Fairweather from New Zealand secured the third spot with a time of 1:55.05.

After the race, McIntosh expressed her disappointment, mentioning that she believes she can achieve a faster time and that she needs to work towards her ultimate goal of winning at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Throughout the race, Pallister and McIntosh exchanged the lead, with Pallister ultimately taking the victory.

McIntosh had not competed in the 200 free internationally since the 2023 world championships. She mentioned that training for the 200 freestyle aligns well with her regular training routine as a 400 freestyler.

In addition to the 200 free, McIntosh will also participate in the 200 individual medley, 400 free, and 400 IM at the championships. She aims to improve her performance and challenge the existing world records in various events. On the men’s side, Blake Tierney claimed gold in the men’s 100m backstroke event and expressed his satisfaction with his performance.

Taylor Ruck contributed to Canada’s medal count by winning bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly and 100m backstroke. Ruck set a Canadian record in the 50m butterfly, showcasing her strong performance. The evening concluded with the Canadian team securing bronze in the 4×100 medley relay event. The United States and Australia claimed the gold and silver medals, respectively, in the relay competition.
