In the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh narrowly missed out on the gold medal by 0.02 seconds, settling for silver behind China’s Yu Yiting, who set a championship record with a time of 2:07.45. American Alex Walsh secured the bronze with a time of 2:07.66.

Yu Yiting started strong, swimming under world-record pace in the butterfly leg but was overtaken by American Regan Smith during the backstroke. Yu regained the lead in the breaststroke leg, ultimately holding off McIntosh in a close finish.

McIntosh added the silver in the 200m individual medley to her collection, having already won gold in the 400m medley and silver in the 200m freestyle. She also contributed to Canada’s bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Reflecting on her performance, McIntosh expressed satisfaction with her swim but acknowledged the need for improvement in upcoming seasons. At just 19 years old, McIntosh emphasized her learning experiences and growth as she transitions into her 20s.

Another Canadian swimmer, Alexanne Lepage, claimed victory in the women’s 200m breaststroke, outpacing reigning Olympic champion Kate Douglass. Lepage’s lifetime best time of 2:21.73 secured her the gold medal, leaving Douglass with the silver. Sophie Angus of Canada finished eighth in the same event.

Canada finished the Pan Pacific Championships with 13 medals, including three gold, four silver, and six bronze, marking their most successful performance since the 1997 edition. The United States led the overall medal tally with 50 medals, followed by Australia with 35 and Canada in third place.

In other events, Taylor Ruck set a new Canadian record in the women’s 50m freestyle, earning fourth place in a competitive field. Lani Pallister of Australia caused an upset by defeating Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle, marking Ledecky’s first international loss in the event.

The championships also saw impressive performances from Australian swimmer Sam Short, who secured victory in the men’s 1,500m freestyle, and Jamie Jack, who set a championship record to win the men’s 50m freestyle. Various Canadian swimmers also competed in different events, showcasing their talent on the international stage.
