One of the UK’s long-standing shoe retailers is set to close its high street store in Worcester after providing service for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes, established in 1872, will permanently shut down on January 10, 2026, due to financial challenges. However, its stores in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue operations without any changes.
Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness over the closure of the family-owned business but emphasized that the Worcester location was no longer sustainable economically. She mentioned, “It’s a tough decision for us as a family business. Unfortunately, the store is not financially viable for the future, and we cannot generate funds out of thin air.”
In response, a spokesperson for Worcester City Council acknowledged the impact of online shopping on traditional retail, emphasizing the shift towards town centers focusing more on leisure and entertainment activities. The council, in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council, Worcester BID, and other stakeholders, has been actively supporting city center traders. Worcester boasts a unique shopping blend of renowned high street brands and independent retailers, with ongoing investments to enhance the public realm and attract visitors.
Meanwhile, Scope, a charity shop chain, has closed three additional high street branches in Morden, Torquay, and Washington as part of its plan to shut down 77 shops this year. The closures follow Scope’s earlier announcement of a forecasted £1.5 million loss, leading to the potential redundancy of around 200 retail staff and impacting approximately 2,000 volunteers. Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closures, emphasizing the vital role the shops played in supporting disabled individuals and their families.
