The prosecutor general of the United Arab Emirates has initiated an inquiry into the stabbing incident that occurred on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a struggle in the cockpit, as per reports from the state news agency on Thursday.
Investigations in the UAE are underway to determine the circumstances and motives behind the incident. Authorities are also looking into potential connections to terrorist activities or premeditated actions. The UAE’s jurisdiction applies to crimes committed onboard aircraft registered in the UAE, even if they occur outside the country’s territory.
Following the attack by a co-pilot on the captain of the passenger jet, questions have arisen regarding the motives and background of the perpetrator. Israeli officials suspect an attempt to crash the plane, which was carrying over 170 individuals.
Concerns have been raised about how the weapon used in the attack, believed to be a knife, was brought onto the aircraft without detection. Fortunately, disaster was avoided when the injured captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers and a reserve crew to subdue the attacker and safely land the plane in Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attacker, identified as an Omani national, is currently being investigated in Saudi Arabia and is expected to be transferred to the UAE. Saudi Arabia has not released any official statements regarding the ongoing investigations.
Acknowledging the heroic actions of the crew and passengers, both Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have praised the captain, Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, for his bravery during the incident. Machchhar is reported to be in good health and recovering well, with Indian authorities maintaining close coordination for his medical care.
Israel has commended the passengers who intervened and subdued the attacker, preventing a potential catastrophe. The incident has raised security concerns in Israel, particularly as the country approaches its upcoming election, with security issues becoming a focal point of the political discourse.
The U.S. and Israel have previously conducted strikes against Iran, leading to regional tensions that have impacted countries like Lebanon and the Gulf region.
