Late in August of last year, Julia Hallman and her spouse embarked on a road trip from their residence in Massachusetts to visit one of their Canadian suppliers at Fromagerie La Station in Quebec. During her visit, Hallman observed the cows on the farm in Compton, which provide the milk for one of her shop’s popular cheeses, the supple Alfred le Fermier. She is committed to continuing to purchase the cheese for her store not only because it is favored by her customers but also because she considers the family as her friends.
Hallman, the owner of Formaggio Kitchen, a specialty cheese and artisan goods shop in Cambridge, expressed her desire to support her suppliers and ensure they receive more financial support. However, like many business owners in both Canada and the U.S., she awaits news on whether the Trump administration will impose significant new tariffs on various Canadian goods. If sustained at 50 percent, these tariffs could potentially force business owners to sever their long-standing relationships with Canadian suppliers due to financial constraints.
Imported products, including cheeses, chocolates, spices, and spreads, make up approximately half of Formaggio Kitchen’s inventory, with Canadian products constituting around 15 percent of these goods. Hallman has previously managed tariffs on Canadian dairy by reducing profits, increasing prices for customers, or a combination of both. Nevertheless, a 50 percent tariff rate would become unsustainable for her business in the long run.
Sarah Paxton, co-owner of a contemporary furniture store called LaDIFF in Richmond, Virginia, shares Hallman’s concerns. Paxton fears that the new tariffs may compel her to seek alternative suppliers in Ontario and Quebec, where her business has sourced products for many years. She acknowledged that while she could temporarily manage the increased costs, a 50 percent tariff would pose significant challenges in the long term.
The impending U.S. tariffs are anticipated to impact $28 billion worth of Canadian goods if a last-minute agreement is not reached between the two governments. Canadian entrepreneurs are apprehensive about the potential financial impact of these tariffs, particularly if American buyers like Hallman and Paxton, who ultimately bear the costs of importing Canadian goods, are forced to look elsewhere for their supplies.
Representatives from Canada and the U.S. held a final ministerial-level meeting on Monday to address the trade negotiations. Prime Minister Mark Carney reportedly spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing discussions.
As the tariff deadline looms, Hallman took precautionary measures by stocking her shop’s basement “cheese cave” with non-perishable items. She emphasized the emotional and financial toll of tariffs, expressing determination to continue importing products she values and loves. The imposition of such high tariffs sends a clear message that challenges the integrity of importing beloved goods.
