In recent years, the Margaree Salmon Association in northern Cape Breton has been utilizing electrofishing as a method to monitor fish populations in the Margaree River. This technique involves the use of an electric current to temporarily stun fish, allowing crews to safely capture, measure, and identify them before returning them to the water.
Michael Fabiano, the association’s conservation co-ordinator, mentioned that electrofishing operations typically run from May to late September, with a mortality rate of around two percent among the thousands of fish processed each season. Emphasizing fish safety as a top priority, Fabiano highlighted the avoidance of electrofishing in high water temperature conditions.
To ensure the safety of crew members working with electricity in water, specific current levels are set to cause fish to roll over for only a brief period. Crew members wear heavy rubber gloves and chest waders as precautionary measures. Notably, no serious incidents involving electric shocks have occurred during Fabiano’s tenure of 18 months with the organization.
The crews conduct surveys along the 120-kilometre river to identify the most productive streams and evaluate the overall health of the fish population. The catch primarily consists of trout and Atlantic salmon, with occasional captures of eels and lampreys. This season, the association has captured and released approximately 1,800 fish across nine streams, reflecting a decrease compared to the previous year, which Fabiano attributes to challenging environmental conditions in the past.
Paul MacNeil, the association’s president, mentioned that the group intensified its scientific research efforts due to reduced data collection by Fisheries and Oceans Canada over the past five years. Established in 1982, the association sought reliable data to monitor river health amid shifting climate patterns.
In collaboration with the Chéticamp River Salmon Association, the Margaree Salmon Association acquired electrofishing equipment to bridge the data gap. While traditional fish counting methods involve swimming the river, MacNeil highlighted the electrofishing technique as providing more precise data on juvenile fish populations within specific territories.
The utilization of electrofishing has enabled the association to enhance its monitoring and research capabilities, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the Margaree River’s ecosystem dynamics and the conservation of its fish populations.
