Android users are being cautioned to remain vigilant and be on the lookout for a new alarming cyber threat. The recent danger is causing concern as it locks phones upon infection, demanding a ransom from users to avoid permanent file destruction.

The security team at Zimperium uncovered the threat known as DroidLock, which is impacting Android users across certain regions in Europe. This threat is being spread through malicious websites promoting fake applications that mimic legitimate software. Once installed, DroidLock can seize full control of devices, monitoring screen unlock codes.

Upon obtaining this data, hackers can alter the codes and lock users out, prompting a ransom demand or the deletion of all files. Victims are presented with a screen overlay indicating the ransom payment requirement, along with a countdown timer for compliance.

Zimperium stated, “The ZLabs research team has identified a new threat campaign targeting Android users. DroidLock, a form of ransomware, spreads via phishing websites, locking device screens with a ransomware-like overlay and illicitly obtaining app lock credentials, resulting in complete device compromise.”

Although DroidLock has not yet reached the UK, Android users should remain cautious. It is crucial for users to only download applications from official sources like Google’s Play Store for safety. Individuals should verify developers’ identities when urged to sideload software and avoid downloading suspicious content.
