“Supreme Court Rejects Trump’s Appeal in $5M Verdict”

Published on

The United States Supreme Court has rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s appeal for a second time, upholding a $5 million verdict in favor of E. Jean Carroll. The jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming the former magazine columnist. Trump’s request for reconsideration of the court’s previous decision in June, which denied his appeal of the 2023 jury verdict related to allegations of rape in the 1990s, was turned down without explanation.

Additionally, the Supreme Court is also considering Trump’s appeal of another $83.3 million jury verdict for defamation, stemming from comments he made during his presidency denying Carroll’s claims. Trump’s legal team argues that presidential immunity should protect him from Carroll’s accusations and disputes the lower courts’ rulings on this matter.

The ongoing legal battle between Trump and Carroll began when she accused him of rape in the 1990s. Trump has consistently denied these allegations, calling them a “hoax” and a “con job.” The $5 million verdict was based on Trump’s statements in 2022, where he dismissed Carroll’s claims on social media. Although the jury did not find Trump guilty of rape, they did determine that he had sexually abused and defamed Carroll.

After the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear Trump’s appeal in June, Carroll received nearly $5.63 million from Trump, which included the original $5 million civil verdict plus interest. Trump’s lawyers have highlighted the potential impact of the issue of presidential immunity on both the $83.3 million verdict and the 2023 case. A landmark 2024 Supreme Court decision established full immunity for former presidents from criminal prosecution for actions during their presidency, though the Carroll cases are civil lawsuits.
