Budget airline Wizz Air is planning to reduce its flight operations at Gatwick Airport, citing financial losses. József Váradi, the CEO of Wizz Air, mentioned that the airline is facing challenges at the UK’s second busiest airport and will focus on increasing flights from Luton due to lower operating costs.

The transition will commence with the relocation of one aircraft from Gatwick to Luton, marking the beginning of a gradual fleet shift. This decision follows the closure of Wizz Air’s subsidiary in Abu Dhabi and the closure of its Vienna base due to high airport expenses.

Mr. Váradi explained to The Telegraph that Gatwick’s high costs and less favorable slots have led to the strategic move to prioritize Luton for financial gains. He emphasized the need to adapt to changing circumstances and prioritize profitable bases, including transferring aircraft from Gatwick to Luton.

While Wizz Air does not plan to completely withdraw from Gatwick, the focus is on optimizing operations at the airport. The introduction of ‘Wizz Class’ by the airline offers passengers the option to pay for a seat with an empty middle seat for added comfort and space during the flight, along with priority boarding and other benefits.

Silvia Mosquera, the commercial officer, highlighted that the new seating option is aimed at meeting the demands of travelers, particularly business passengers seeking more comfort while flying. The ‘Wizz Class’ service will be available on selected flights departing from London, Rome, Warsaw, Bucharest, and Budapest starting in December.
