Russian military leaders carried out an attack on Ukraine overnight, launching nearly 500 bombs and resulting in the deaths of six individuals. This occurred amidst speculation that Ukraine might have agreed to a significant peace agreement brokered by the United States and Russia. Prior to any official confirmation from Kyiv, the onslaught by Russian forces caused chaos and explosions in Kyiv, prompting Romanian fighter jets to scramble and reports of airspace violations in Moldova.
The assault not only caused fires in residential buildings and widespread destruction of infrastructure across Ukraine but also led to a missile crashing into a home in Moldova, marked with a wartime symbol. Additionally, six Russian drones breached Moldovan airspace in one of the most severe violations since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.
A total of 22 missiles and 460 drones were unleashed, forcing Ukrainians to seek shelter and resulting in the disruption of essential services like water, electricity, and heating in parts of the capital. The Moldovan Defense Ministry issued a warning for citizens to report any foreign objects seen and emphasized the importance of not touching any fallen debris but instead notifying authorities.
Incursions into Romanian airspace by Russian drones triggered the immediate response of F-16 Fighting Falcon jets, with radar systems detecting multiple violations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the incursions into Moldova and Romania by Russian drones, stressing the need for continuous support in saving lives, maintaining strong defense capabilities, and sustaining pressure through sanctions on the aggressor.
During the attacks, casualties were reported, including fatalities and injuries in various districts of Kyiv. The violence followed high-level discussions between Ukraine and European leaders regarding peace prospects, with a focus on aligning the peace plan with the interests of Moscow.
US President Donald Trump’s wavering stance, largely favoring Moscow, drew criticism as he criticized Ukraine for allegedly lacking gratitude for US assistance in the conflict. Trump’s proposed 28-point plan, believed to be influenced by Russia, included contentious concessions for Ukraine, such as relinquishing control of occupied territories, refraining from NATO membership, and restricting troop numbers – terms that many experts doubt Kyiv would accept given the sacrifices made during the conflict.
