“Saskatchewan Premier Imposes 50% Tariff on U.S. Alcohol”

Published on

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has declared a countermeasure on U.S. alcohol products in response to a 50 per cent tariff imposed on Canadian alcohol exports to the U.S. The announcement was made during a news conference in Prince Albert, with the premier stating that starting on September 8, American alcohol entering the province will face a 50 per cent markup.

Saskatchewan clarified that the levy on American alcohol will be enforced by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, with the additional charge being borne by retailers. Despite this move, the province has indicated that it will not remove U.S. alcoholic beverages from shelves, leaving the decision to purchase them in the hands of Saskatchewan consumers.

In support of the federal government’s actions, Moe commended the targeted approach taken by Ottawa in implementing counter-tariffs on U.S. imports following failed trade negotiations. He criticized the U.S. for violating international trade agreements and emphasized the importance of expanding trade relationships beyond North America.

Moe stressed that Saskatchewan will not support export tariffs on key resources like potash and oil, as such tariffs could have severe implications for industries in the region. The province is closely examining the impact of counter-tariffs on various sectors and is collaborating with affected industries to assess potential consequences on employment and consumer prices.

Regarding negotiations with the U.S., Moe highlighted the significance of maintaining dialogue to avoid imposing export tariffs on resources vital to both countries. The premier underscored the importance of reaching a mutually beneficial trade agreement that safeguards the interests of Canadians and Americans.
