Cristiano Ronaldo hints at retirement as career milestone approaches

Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the current Saudi Pro League season may mark the end of his illustrious career. The 41-year-old football icon’s contract with Al-Nassr, which he signed in December 2022, is set to expire in June, with Ronaldo expressing doubts about extending it further.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Ronaldo stated, “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.” The prolific Portugal forward, known for his remarkable 976 career goals, recently tied the knot with his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez.

Reflecting on his future plans, Ronaldo mentioned, “I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one. And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned — what we’ve earned. Because after all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”

The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year as a professional player, during which he has claimed five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles. His exceptional performance last season, scoring 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to clinch the Saudi Arabian championship in May, marking his first title win since joining the Riyadh-based club and the first league triumph for the team since 2019.

Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s initial match of the season, where the team secured a 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh, with the star forward watching from the sidelines. Coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s continuous support, stating, “Cristiano is here today, and he is always present with us.”

Looking ahead, Ronaldo is expected to feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah on Tuesday, as Postecoglou emphasized the importance of recovery following the tight schedule. Ronaldo’s statements coincided with Lionel Messi’s revelation that he may consider retirement soon after his father’s passing, with Messi expressing uncertainty about his future in the sport.
