A storm hit Prince Edward Island in the afternoon, bringing strong winds, hail, rain, thunder, and lightning. The severe weather passed through Charlottetown around 1:40 p.m., causing power outages for numerous Maritime Electric customers, mainly in Charlottetown. Meteorologist Ryan Snodden from CBC described it as a tumultuous day weather-wise in central and eastern parts of the province.

Snodden highlighted the slow-moving thunderstorms that led to intense rainfall, gusty winds, and localized hail, with radar estimates showing rainfall rates nearing 50 mm/h. There were indications of a probable tornado near Souris in eastern P.E.I., with a video submitted to CBC News capturing trees being lifted into the air and the tornado forming over the water.

Witnesses like Brielle Campbell in Little Harbour near Souris recounted seeing swirling clouds and ground-level activity during the storm. The weather chaos extended to Blair Chapman’s residence, where shrubs were seen flying and apple trees and forest trees were uprooted.

The storm’s unpredictability was evident with reports of heavy rain, sunshine, followed by downpours. Charlottetown police cautioned about localized flooding in the city, leading to street closures in areas like Sherwood and Parkdale. Some businesses shut down temporarily, including the sports center at UPEI due to the extreme weather conditions.

A dumpster floating away on Exhibition Drive in Charlottetown during the storm was captured in a video, showcasing the impact of the flooding caused by the Wednesday storm.
