Chris Norbury, a long-time Tumbler Ridge resident with a personal connection to the local high school, reflected on the demolition of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School this week. Norbury’s wife was present during the tragic mass shooting that occurred at the school in February. He joined other community members in observing the commencement of the demolition on Monday, emphasizing the significance of this event for the town’s future.
Constructed in the 1980s during Tumbler Ridge’s coal mining era, the brown-bricked school has been a hub of memories for generations of students over the last four decades. However, following the harrowing events of February 10, both students and teachers expressed a desire not to return to the school and advocated for its removal to aid in the healing process.
As the community looks towards a fresh start, plans are underway for a new school while students temporarily attend classes at an expanded campus. The temporary setup includes modular classrooms, administrative offices, and additional facilities to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment. Distance learning options will be available for students who may not be ready for in-person classes.
Regarding the future of the demolished school’s site, discussions are ongoing about potential permanent memorials and the utilization of the property. Mayor Darryl Krakowka stated that decisions regarding memorials will be guided by the wishes of the victims’ families. The town continues to rally around the affected community members, seeking to provide support and foster a sense of healing and unity.
The municipality is actively developing a comprehensive community recovery plan with support from provincial and federal authorities. Mayor Krakowka emphasized the importance of listening to residents, especially the youth, to ensure that the recovery efforts are inclusive and address all necessary aspects for community well-being.
Looking ahead, plans for the new school are progressing, with consultations on school designs expected later this year. The community has expressed a desire to maintain key facilities and programs in the new school, emphasizing the importance of a centralized location and inclusive amenities.
Chris Norbury expressed optimism for the future, eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the new school that will mark a new beginning for Tumbler Ridge. The community remains united in its journey towards recovery and resilience, aiming to honor the past while embracing a hopeful future.
