“Tragic Flash Flood in Nepal Leaves Toronto Trekking Group Missing”

Published on

Ten individuals from Toronto who were part of a group trekking in Nepal are currently missing following a tragic flash flood incident in the region. Leslie Crespi, representing the Isha Foundation in North America, disclosed that these ten individuals are part of a larger group of 80 members from the foundation who are still unaccounted for. Among the 12 Canadians on the trek, these ten are reportedly missing.

Crespi mentioned that there has been no communication with any of the 80 individuals involved in the trek. The group was last in touch when the coordinator contacted the Isha Foundation after arriving at a Chinese immigration center in Gyirong County, Tibet. Shortly after their arrival, the flash flooding occurred, cutting off all communication.

The trek group, comprising participants from 19 different countries, was returning from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a significant pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers. Families of the missing group members are understandably in shock and devastated by the unexpected turn of events.

In response to the crisis, Nepali community leaders in Mississauga held an emergency meeting to discuss strategies for locating the missing individuals. They are planning to seek assistance from the Canadian government in the search and rescue efforts.

Global Affairs Canada released a statement acknowledging approximately 30 missing Canadian citizens and permanent residents in Nepal and Tibet. Consular officials are actively working to establish contact with the missing individuals and ensure their safety, while also collaborating with various organizations and authorities for information gathering and support.

GlobalMedic, a relief organization based in Etobicoke, has offered to deploy water purification units, emergency kits, and drones to assist those affected by the disaster in Nepal. These resources will help provide clean drinking water, essential supplies, and aid in search and rescue operations.
