Canada’s trade relationship with the U.S. is facing increased uncertainty due to a growing number of tariffs. President Donald Trump’s threats have added complexity to North American free trade, causing economic concerns in Canada.
In response to various trade issues such as provincial bans on U.S. alcohol and Canada’s restricted dairy market, Trump has imposed a 50 per cent tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada walked away from negotiations due to dissatisfaction with the U.S. offer, stating that it was excessive and insufficient.
Canada retaliated by implementing tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 per cent in early September. In response, the U.S. imposed import bans on Canadian products, including alcohol and motorcycles. The ongoing trade dispute has also led to additional bans on various products, including the long-standing prohibition on American alcohol in many Canadian provinces.
The trade war between the two countries has resulted in escalating tensions beyond tariffs, with each side taking restrictive measures on several goods.
