“Trump to Sue BBC Over Altered Speech”

Published on

Donald Trump has announced his intention to take legal action against the BBC shortly after the network altered a speech he made for a Panorama documentary. Speaking from the Oval Office at the White House, the US President stated that he planned to file a libel lawsuit either later that day or the following evening in response to allegations that the BBC tampered with his speech before the notorious January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. Trump expressed his discontent, accusing the BBC of manipulating his words, possibly through the use of artificial intelligence.

Trump emphasized that the BBC had misrepresented him by inserting unfavorable language into his speech. This incident occurred after the BBC issued an apology to Trump for the edited segment, which aired during a 2024 Panorama episode. The documentary had spliced together portions of Trump’s 2021 speech, creating a misleading quote where Trump appeared to be urging his supporters to march alongside him and “fight like hell,” while omitting his call for peaceful demonstrations.

Following the scandal, Director-General Tim Davie and news chief Deborah Turness resigned, citing the damage caused to the BBC. A BBC spokesperson acknowledged the error in judgment and confirmed that the edited clip would not be rebroadcast on any BBC platforms.

In response to the situation, the BBC communicated that it had responded to President Trump’s legal team and that the BBC Chair had personally apologized to the White House for the misrepresented speech. The network stated that while they regretted the editing of the video clip, they disagreed with the basis for a defamation claim.

Legal experts highlighted potential challenges for Trump in pursuing legal action against the BBC in either the UK or the US, pointing out that the BBC could argue that Trump’s election as president in 2024 indicated he was not significantly harmed by the incident. Despite Trump’s threat of a billion-dollar lawsuit, BBC leaders opted not to engage in a public dispute with him.

Trump reiterated his intention to sue the BBC, citing the dishonest editing of his speech. In response to Trump’s recent comments, a BBC spokesperson confirmed that they had not received further communication from Trump’s legal team and maintained their stance on the matter.
