“Asda Struggles with Sales Decline Despite Turnaround Efforts”

Published on

Asda, the well-known supermarket chain, faced a challenging situation with a notable 7% decline in sales. Market analysts from NielsenIQ reported a decrease in Asda’s market share from 12.2% to 10.9% over the last three months.

Following its acquisition by billionaire brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa along with private equity firm TDR Capital in 2021, Asda has been striving to overcome these challenges. The company, now under TDR’s control, brought back veteran executive chairman Allan Leighton to lead the way, leveraging his successful turnaround expertise from the 1990s.

Despite implementing significant price reductions in March, including the most extensive price cuts in 25 years, Asda still experienced a sharp drop in sales. The supermarket chain aimed to be 5% to 10% cheaper than its key competitors such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons by utilizing a substantial budget for increased discounting.

However, recent data from NielsenIQ indicated that Asda was the only major supermarket to witness a year-on-year sales decline in the three months leading up to November. In contrast, Tesco and Sainsbury’s experienced sales growth of 4.5% and 5.2%, respectively. Aldi, a discount retailer, also posed a threat to Asda with a market share of 10.3%.

An Asda spokesperson acknowledged the ongoing challenges but expressed confidence in the company’s strategic direction. The spokesperson highlighted improvements in product availability, store operations, and competitive pricing, aiming to reestablish Asda as the UK’s most affordable traditional supermarket.

To attract more customers, Asda launched a festive advertising campaign featuring The Grinch, coinciding with NielsenIQ’s projection of households spending £20 billion on Christmas groceries this year, with a peak expected at £5.7 billion next week.

Mike Watkins, the head of retailer and business insight at NielsenIQ, noted that consumers are prioritizing affordability this holiday season, making thoughtful choices to save on routine purchases to allocate more budget for special treats and gifts in December.
