U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for a discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a potential plague case at a Siberian research facility. Trump mentioned during a White House press briefing that he would be engaging in talks with Putin imminently. Health authorities are investigating an employee’s death at an anti-plague institute, which has been linked to pneumonia of unknown origin.
When questioned about the U.S. intelligence community’s stance on the matter, Trump revealed ongoing extensive deliberations within the U.S. on the issue. Trump assured that a detailed report on the discussions would likely be available the following day.
The World Health Organization assessed the risk associated with the case as “very low” beyond Russia’s borders. The organization confirmed its communication with Russian authorities following the recent death of a female staff member at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East.
In a previous statement, Trump expressed the U.S.’s readiness to assist Russia in managing the situation. The impending call between the two leaders coincides with the Trump administration’s nearing deadline of October 18 to identify Russian entities for potential sanctions under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, enacted by Trump on September 18.
Ukraine has submitted a list to the U.S. administration and Congress outlining Russian companies, vessels, and individuals it recommends for sanctions under the aforementioned law.
