Grace Stelmachowicz, a resident of Squamish, B.C., shares her journey diverging from the conventional path to success. The traditional roadmap of attending university, securing a job in one’s field, getting married, buying a house, and having children was deeply ingrained in her upbringing. However, in 2016, while pursuing her biomedical engineering studies at the University of Guelph, her trajectory took an unexpected turn.
Following her second year of university, Stelmachowicz aimed to land a summer engineering job to enhance her resume. Despite unsuccessful attempts in Ontario, she found herself employed at a horseback trail riding establishment in Banff National Park. This deviation from her planned course led her to explore the rugged Rockies on horseback, fulfilling her childhood dream of riding in the mountains. Guiding guests through pine forests, steering horse-drawn wagons along the Bow River, and traversing wildflower meadows among elk herds became her daily adventures.
Embracing a life beyond the conventional corporate trajectory, Stelmachowicz discovered joy in simple pleasures like serene mornings and acknowledging the beauty surrounding her. She learned to appreciate moments like warming her toes by the fire after enduring a 16-hour rainy day shift. Engaging in seasonal work exposed her to a diverse array of individuals, including career break-takers, international travelers funding their journeys through seasonal jobs, and full-time seasonal workers transitioning between summer and winter roles.
The relationships fostered during her time as a trail guide in Banff left a lasting impact, unlike any connections formed in academic or professional settings. The intensity of living and working alongside colleagues for months forged deep, enduring bonds. Reuniting with former colleagues from Australia for a white Christmas in Canada exemplified the lasting friendships she cultivated through seasonal work. While goodbyes posed challenges as friendships dispersed, Stelmachowicz embraced the ever-evolving definitions of success and the varied paths individuals take in life.
Despite initial skepticism from her family about straying from her engineering degree, Stelmachowicz’s seasonal work experiences across Canada validated her unconventional choices. Transitioning to a career in international sales, she now enjoys a role that enables her to travel and explore the world. The problem-solving and self-reliance honed during her time as a guide continue to shape her professional journey, despite occasional yearnings for the simplicity of mountain life.
Grateful for the altered perspective on success gained through her diverse experiences, Stelmachowicz encourages others to venture out, experiment, and relish the joy of exploration. Embracing her unconventional path, she finds fulfillment in pursuing her dreams and crafting a life she cherishes.
