A circle of companions embarking on a remarkable journey recounted how a picturesque hike transformed into a tragic ordeal.

Survivors of a severe blizzard that struck Torres del Paine National Park in Chile shared the harrowing events that led to the demise of their friend, Victoria Bond. Victoria, a 40-year-old PR manager from Cornwall, was among the five individuals who lost their lives on November 17 during the snowstorm, with winds reaching 120mph.

Hayley Newnham, Tom Player, Matt Smith, and Christian Aldridge, all in their forties, accompanied Victoria on their expedition to Patagonia and have now revealed the challenges they faced.

The group, hailing from Newquay, Cornwall, embarked on an eight-day journey, trekking through lush valleys, forested hills, streams, and majestic glaciers, all lured by Chile’s awe-inspiring landscapes.

Describing the trip as demanding and costly, Tom emphasized its unique nature, labeling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They were forewarned about the unpredictable weather in Patagonia, preparing for strong winds and abrupt changes in conditions.

Despite encountering rainy and sunny days initially, the group faced escalating winds and plummeting temperatures on the third day. The camp staff assured them that the weather was typical for early spring in Torres del Paine.

Hayley expressed hindsight regarding the lack of a snow report and advanced warning, suggesting that the trail should have been closed for safety reasons.

As conditions worsened with winds reaching 120mph and temperatures dropping to -5C, the group decided to retreat. Tom likened the experience to a blizzard and highlighted the challenges they encountered, including a failed SOS call due to a dead phone battery.

Attempting to slide down for safety, the group split up, losing sight of each other in the blizzard. Upon regrouping, they realized Victoria was missing, prompting a search effort led by Tom and another member.

Tragically, Victoria was not the only casualty, as five individuals, including two Mexican and two German tourists, succumbed to hypothermia. The survivors, while relieved to be safe, were deeply affected by the loss and the ordeal they endured.
