A tragic incident occurred at the Disneyland Resort in California, where a visitor lost her life on one of the popular rides. Dolly Regene Young, 47, was fatally injured on the Matterhorn Bobsled ride in 1984 when she was ejected from the ride and hit by an oncoming cart.
The incident took place in the late afternoon around 3:30 pm when Young’s unfastened seatbelt caused her to be thrown from the ride. She was seated at the back of the cart, which made it difficult for her friends to realize she had been ejected.
Investigators are unsure if the seatbelt was intentionally undone or if there was a malfunction. Such fatal accidents are extremely rare in the park’s history, with this being the first in decades.
The ride was stopped within 30 seconds of the accident to prevent further harm and provide immediate assistance to Young. Disneyland spokesperson Bob Roth mentioned that Young’s friends were unaware of her fall until the ride ended, and fortunately, no one else was injured.
The Matterhorn ride was closed immediately after the incident but reopened the next day. The ride accommodated eight passengers across two carriages, traveling around a snow-covered mountain.
The cart that hit Young was moving at approximately 20 mph, causing her immediate death. Unfortunately, this was not the first fatality on this ride, with a previous incident occurring in 1964.
