A man has been arrested by Toronto police in connection with the setting on fire of multiple cars at the residence of a Scarborough MP. Identified as Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, he faces several charges, including arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of incendiary materials, and breaching probation orders. Additionally, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata, suspected to be linked to the incident, was confiscated, with authorities seeking information on its whereabouts before the alleged arson took place.
Authorities are also on the lookout for a second suspect in relation to the incident, which transpired in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home. Zahid, who represents the Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East federal riding, expressed gratitude towards the police following the arrest announcement, stating no motive for the attack has been discerned yet.
The incident, which occurred on August 27, involved an unidentified individual approaching the vehicles in the driveway, pouring an accelerant, setting two cars ablaze, and fleeing the scene. A third vehicle was also damaged by the flames. Zahid, a Liberal backbencher serving as an MP since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.
Various political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the act as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” The investigation remains ongoing, with police continuing their search for the second suspect.
