A Calgary-based company called Solvet has received approval from the FDA to market its equine ivermectin product in the United States to combat screwworm. Solvet’s CEO, Lionel Gibbs, stated that the ivermectin liquid for horses is unique as it is an aqueous-based solution rather than a paste, making it more concentrated and easier to administer.
Established in 2009 by former University of Calgary professors, Solvet has grown to become one of Canada’s leading veterinary pharmaceutical companies. Ivermectin, known for its anti-parasitic properties, is commonly used to treat various parasites, including screwworm, a type of fly found in parts of North America.
Screwworm flies lay eggs on wounds of mammals like horses, leading to larvae infestation, tissue damage, infections, and potential fatalities. The successful eradication of screwworms in North America was achieved through the sterile insect technique, where mass-raised and sterilized male flies were released to mate with females, preventing future generations of flies.
Despite previous eradication efforts, screwworm has resurfaced in Central America and Mexico, raising concerns in the southern United States. The recent discovery of screwworm larvae on a calf in Texas prompted the CFIA to impose a temporary ban on livestock imports from the state.
Solvet’s emergency use authorization in the U.S. specifically targets screwworm prevention in horses within 24 hours of birth or initial wound care. The authorization aims to protect animals in high-risk areas like Texas where screwworm is present.
Veterinarian John Gilleard from the University of Calgary supports the authorization, emphasizing the need to safeguard animal welfare during potential outbreaks. While the risk of screwworm in Canada is low, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and collaborate with U.S. counterparts.
Gibbs views this situation as an opportunity for Solvet and Alberta to expand internationally, particularly in the U.S. market. By providing a solution during a critical time, Solvet hopes to not only benefit animal welfare but also stimulate economic growth and research opportunities in Alberta.
