The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has achieved global success once again. After a 17-year gap, the band secured the Grade 1 global title at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, marking their seventh championship victory. Led by Pipe Major Alan Bevan, the band’s exceptional performance was praised by Glasgow Life, the organization hosting the competition on behalf of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

Bevan expressed the significance of winning the championship, stating, “It’s the top prize in the world of pipe bands.” This win is notable as it is the first time since 2010 that a non-U.K. band has claimed the world championship, as confirmed by Glasgow Life. Over 200 bands from 14 countries participated in the competition, showcasing the talents of pipers and drummers from around the globe.

Andrew Lee, a bagpiper in the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, emphasized the band’s persistence in pursuing the championship, stating, “A lot of years, we thought we were close. But to finally get it felt incredible.” Lee, a member of the band for 21 years, highlighted the dedication and teamwork that led to this victory, describing the win as a tremendous honor.

Preparations for the competition began in the fall, as Bevan explained. The band’s distinctive approach, aiming to replicate a solo player’s sound with expressive performances, sets them apart. With a dynamic drum section that generates energy, the band captivates audiences and receives enthusiastic cheers. This year, the band felt exceptionally well-prepared, delivering their best performances during the competition.

The band’s diverse members include individuals from various professions, such as teachers, lawyers, students, and even a bagpipe maker. Bevan praised the strong piping community in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, emphasizing the availability of excellent teachers and youth programs for aspiring musicians.
