“Severe Thunderstorm Sweeps Through British Columbia’s South Coast”

Published on

Lightning storms illuminated the skies over British Columbia’s South Coast overnight in a rare event as a severe thunderstorm swept through the region, causing disruptions at Vancouver International Airport and affecting flight schedules. CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe described the system as significant with numerous cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, particularly in the Vancouver/Richmond area.

The low-pressure system, carrying abundant moisture, made landfall near Richmond after traveling from the equator. Environment Canada reported over 1,800 lightning strikes in the Lower Mainland on Saturday night and Sunday morning, while the B.C. Wildfire Service documented more than 7,000 strikes across the province.

During the storm, B.C. Hydro experienced multiple power outages, leaving over 3,800 customers without electricity in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast regions by Sunday morning. At Vancouver International Airport, the severe weather led to numerous delays and cancellations between 9 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. PT Sunday, stranding passengers like Simone McCallum overnight.

YVR spokesperson Stephen Smart issued apologies for the inconvenience caused to travelers, noting that the storm brought over five hours of lightning and 64 millimeters of rain to the airport, exceeding the average August precipitation. The airport worked to resume normal operations while dealing with ongoing flight impacts.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reported around 2,000 lightning strikes in the Coastal Fire Centre and another 5,000 in the B.C. Interior, leading to at least 48 wildfires, with crews on high alert. Although the storm provided much-needed rain, it was insufficient to counteract months of drought, raising concerns about potential fire outbreaks from smoldering fuel.

Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm watches for southeastern B.C., triggering high streamflow advisories in various regions. The storm brought significant rainfall across southern B.C., with notable amounts recorded in different areas. Travel advisories were issued due to heavy rains, cautioning travelers about potential road closures.

The thunderstorm activity, unusual for the region, captivated residents and brought challenges that authorities worked to address swiftly. Despite the disruptions, efforts were made to ensure safety and minimize the impact of the severe weather conditions on the affected areas.
