European football chief Aleksander Ceferin emphasized the need to mend the fractured unity and trust following FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s failed World Cup commercialization scheme. Ceferin, who leads UEFA, highlighted the importance of prioritizing the sport over personal ambitions in his address to soccer and business leaders in Lisbon.
During the backlash in July against Infantino’s proposal to sell a portion of FIFA’s future commercial rights, Ceferin spearheaded UEFA’s efforts to halt the plan, which aimed to generate $4.2 billion from investors led by Josh Kushner. Despite the swift abandonment of the scheme by Infantino, UEFA expressed intentions to work towards his removal from office and pursue legal action for alleged financial misconduct.
Ceferin stressed the significance of unity, transparency, and inclusive governance in restoring trust within football, underscoring the breach of these principles by certain individuals in recent times. FIFA defended the now-scrapped FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative as a means to advance global soccer development beyond Europe’s affluent sphere.
As the countdown to the FIFA election continues, Ceferin confirmed that he would not be a contender against Infantino, who seeks re-election for a final term through 2031. Various potential challengers are being considered, with the deadline for candidacy set for November 18, ahead of the election in Morocco.
In response to FIFA’s financial offer to its members through the FFE project, UEFA and its allies proposed an alternative plan utilizing FIFA’s substantial cash reserves to provide a one-time payment to each member. Infantino, in a bid to address concerns over governance, has proposed an independent review of FIFA’s decision-making processes, with a meeting scheduled for October 15 in Zurich.
UEFA had previously called for an independent evaluation of the FFE project, which was developed without the knowledge of some FIFA senior officials over the past year. Infantino’s history with independent oversight of FIFA came under scrutiny following the removal of a key governance official in 2017, sparking resignations from other independent members in protest.
