The highly anticipated El Niño has arrived, and it is already proving to be significant. Earlier in the year, climate experts had predicted the development of an El Niño in the central Pacific area. Over time, more models indicated the likelihood of a strong or “super” El Niño, although certainty remained low. In its monthly update in June, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) officially announced the presence of warmer conditions in the Niño 3.4 region of the Pacific Ocean, a key indicator for El Niño.

For an El Niño to be confirmed, temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region must be at least 0.5°C above average. Currently, ocean temperatures in this area are nearly 2°C higher than average, setting a record for this time of year. Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, noted that temperatures are now exceeding 2°C, indicative of a very strong El Niño, even in early July.

El Niño and La Niña are part of the larger natural cycle known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). While La Niña brings cooler temperatures, El Niño results in warmer conditions. Forecasts suggest that the peak of this El Niño event may occur in October, with chances increasing for November or December.

The previous record for the strongest El Niño was in 2015-2016, with an ocean temperature anomaly of approximately 2.75°C. The rapid transition from La Niña to El Niño this year has surprised experts. Speculation remains on the role of climate change in the intensity of this El Niño event.

One notable concern is the potential impact on food security in tropical regions due to anticipated droughts. In Canada, milder winter temperatures and drier conditions are expected, raising concerns for increased wildfire risks in the spring. As preparations are made for the potential impacts, experts emphasize the seriousness of El Niño’s effects on various ecosystems and sectors.
