“Man Charged with Vandalism at Saskatoon Synagogue”

Published on

A 31-year-old man from Dundurn, Saskatchewan, has been charged with three counts of mischief under $5,000 in connection with vandalism at a Saskatoon synagogue, as reported by city police. The incident occurred during a prayer service at the Congregation Agudas Israel synagogue on August 1, where the man allegedly threw eggs at vehicles and parts of the building.

Following the release of a surveillance camera image of the suspect, public tips helped identify him. The man voluntarily surrendered to the police on Thursday after arrangements were made, as stated in a news release issued on Friday. He has been released with conditions pending his initial court appearance. While the Saskatoon police hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation, the suspect is not facing hate crime charges, clarified the release.

Supt. James Oliver emphasized that in Canada, ‘hate crime’ is a general term rather than a specific charge under the Criminal Code. Nonetheless, any indication of bias, prejudice, or hate in an offense is viewed as an aggravating factor during sentencing.

Although the charges were based on the available evidence at the time, they could be modified by the prosecution if further evidence supports it, according to a police spokesperson responding to CBC News. Rabbi Claudio Jodorkovsky expressed concern about the vandalism occurring in daylight and emphasized the need for trust in Saskatoon as a secure place for the Jewish community.

Statistics Canada reported that in 2024, 70% of police-reported hate crimes against religious groups were aimed at the Jewish community.
