Andy Burnham has not dismissed the possibility of challenging Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party. When questioned on the matter, the Mayor of Greater Manchester avoided giving a direct answer, stating that he could not rule out a potential move against the current Prime Minister.
This development comes after Labour MP Clive Lewis expressed his willingness to vacate his parliamentary seat to pave the way for Burnham to launch a leadership bid. During an interview on BBC Breakfast, Burnham stated, “I am not going to sit here this morning and rule out what might or might not happen because I don’t know what the future will hold.”
When pressed further about a potential leadership challenge, Burnham mentioned, “I am not in a position this morning to do that. The questions you are always asked on these things – how do you answer them? All I can do is be here, present in the here and now, and do my job for Greater Manchester.”
Acknowledging the support from Clive Lewis, Burnham emphasized his focus on his role as the mayor of Greater Manchester, providing leadership on growth initiatives that he believes are crucial for the country. He highlighted the need for a new approach to politics and emphasized the success of the economic model implemented in Greater Manchester as a potential solution to the challenges faced by the country.
