O2 Network Issues Final Warning to Users of Older Phones
O2, a leading UK provider now part of Virgin Media, has alerted users of older phones connected to its network to upgrade promptly. The company has officially announced the imminent shutdown of its 3G signal later this year, following similar moves by other major operators like EE and Vodafone.
According to O2, although some areas might still display a 3G signal in early 2026, the network will be entirely deactivated soon. This means individuals still using 3G-only devices will lose access to online services and apps like WhatsApp when not connected to Wi-Fi unless they switch to a device supporting 4G or 5G connectivity.
Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the importance of transitioning to more advanced networks like 4G and 5G, highlighting that 3G is becoming obsolete. She mentioned that Virgin Media O2 is close to completing its program to discontinue 3G, after successful trials conducted throughout 2025.
O2 assured that only a small percentage of the population will be affected by the change and urged users with 3G devices to have already received upgrade notifications. Failure to upgrade before the 3G shutdown will result in the inability to use mobile data, although basic call and text functionalities will remain unaffected.
The decision to phase out 3G is driven by the platform’s inability to meet current demands, with 3G speeds significantly lagging behind those of 5G. By discontinuing 3G, more bandwidth will be available for enhancing 4G and 5G services.
York elaborated that the 3G network now accounts for less than 2% of mobile data usage, prompting the industry and government to agree on its withdrawal in 2021. This reallocation of mobile spectrum to 4G and 5G services aims to offer customers improved experiences, including faster data speeds, more reliable streaming, and higher-quality voice calls.
