Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have spoken out following their disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Norris had finished in second place behind race victor Max Verstappen, with Piastri coming in fourth. However, their cars did not pass the technical inspections after the race due to excessive skid-block wear.
The FIA released a statement confirming the disqualification reason, nullifying their results and shaking up the championship standings with only two races remaining. Norris now leads Piastri and Verstappen by 24 points before the upcoming race in Qatar and the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Norris expressed disappointment over the outcome, citing issues with the car that led to the disqualification. He emphasized shifting focus to Qatar for a strong performance in the next race. Piastri also conveyed frustration, acknowledging the need to regroup and maximize points in the final two rounds.
McLaren issued an apology to Norris and Piastri for the disqualification, attributing the breach to skid thickness violations. The team clarified that the issue was unintentional, with no deliberate intent to break regulations. They vowed to investigate the car’s behavior and remain committed to the remaining races.
FIA scrutineers found that the planks under the McLaren cars were below the minimum 9mm thickness required at the end of the race, indicating an illegal ride height. This led to the disqualification from the final race classification.
