“Nazi German Warships Revealed in Danube as Heatwave Dries River”

Published on

The Danube River is revealing sunken Nazi German warships as water levels drop due to the ongoing heat and drought in Europe. The recent heat wave is the fifth one since May, predicted to bring scorching temperatures to western Europe. The Copernicus climate monitoring service confirmed that June and July were the hottest on record in western Europe, leading to an estimated 25,000 heat-related deaths.

The extreme heat has led to devastating wildfires and record-low water levels in crucial waterways like the Danube. Climate scientists warn that these events are clear indicators of the worsening impact of fossil fuel-driven climate change on heat, drought, wildfires, agriculture, shipping, and energy systems in Europe.

Historians believe that during World War II, the Nazis deliberately scuttled approximately 200 warships in the Danube near the Serbian city of Prahovo to halt advancing Soviet forces. Due to the low water levels this year, more wrecks have become visible, including a German military motorcycle in Hungary, an unexploded British bomb in Slovakia, and possible ancient mammoth remains in Bulgaria.

Several countries along the Danube, Europe’s second-longest river, are facing urgent concerns due to the drying river. Efforts to cope with the water crisis include restrictions on water use for crop irrigation, nuclear power plant operations, and energy conservation measures.

Climate change is exacerbating heat extremes and drought conditions, as seen by the significantly higher temperatures compared to the past. Experts warn that unless greenhouse gas emissions are sharply reduced, the situation will worsen, leading to more frequent extreme weather events in the future.

The emergence of a potential “super El Niño” could further exacerbate the global temperature rise, compounding the effects of existing greenhouse gas emissions. The current heatwave and its impacts are just a preview of what may come if emissions continue at the current rate.
