Nick Reiner, facing accusations of his parents’ murder, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been refused access to the $1.5 million US trust fund he sought for his legal defense. In a recent court filing, Reiner was attempting to claim funds from a trust his parents set up for him in 1993.
Trustees, as per documents from CBC News, turned down Reiner’s request due to the “slayer statute” in California law. This statute prohibits individuals who have “feloniously and intentionally” killed someone from inheriting money, property, or trusts from the deceased. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and Michele, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their California residence on December 14, 2025. Shortly after, their son Nick Reiner was taken into custody.
Nick Reiner, aged 32, was charged with murder on July 20 and has entered a plea of not guilty. The indictment, unveiled by a Los Angeles County grand jury, suggests that Reiner planned the attack on his parents. This, along with other circumstances, raises the possibility of him facing the death penalty, although the District Attorney has not confirmed seeking it yet.
Scheduled for a pretrial hearing in September, Reiner is currently represented by public defender Kimberly Greene. The filing in June highlighted that besides the main family trust fund, individual trusts were set up for the Reiner children. Nick Reiner was supposed to receive half of his trust fund at age 30 and the remainder at 35. However, he alleged in the petition that he did not receive the funds due to trustees denying access to his rightful money.
The assets in the trust were valued at a minimum of $1.5 million US. Although prominent attorney Alan Jackson was initially involved in Reiner’s defense, he departed within a month without disclosing the reason. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal expenses but later reversed their decision.
Paul R. Kanin, the previous overseer of the trust fund, and incoming trustee Jodi Pais Montgomery concluded that the pending criminal case against Reiner necessitated withholding fund distribution. The filing emphasized that until the outcome of the criminal proceedings clarifies Reiner’s entitlement to the funds, access to the trust fund remains restricted. Motives behind the tragic events are still unknown to the public, with authorities refraining from speculating.
In a heartfelt reflection, Jake Reiner expressed the harrowing experience of losing both parents simultaneously and the attention his brother’s case has drawn. Rob Reiner, known for his extensive contributions to the film industry, was revered for directing iconic movies like “The Princess Bride” and “A Few Good Men.” His love story with Michele began on the set of “When Harry Met Sally,” with their marriage lasting 36 years.
