Labour is being urged to support delivery workers who were fired for speaking out against DPD’s proposed pay cuts, as stated by a former Cabinet minister. Louise Haigh criticized the delivery company for its treatment of self-employed drivers facing reduced delivery rates, potentially costing them thousands annually. Haigh, a former Transport Secretary, called on the Government to resist worker exploitation.

Following the protest where many drivers refused deliveries for three days, DPD reportedly dismissed drivers who voiced concerns about their treatment. Dean Hawkins, a spokesperson for the drivers, emphasized the need for government support, highlighting the crucial role delivery drivers played during the pandemic.

Labour peer Lord John Hendy advocated for amendments to the Employment Rights Bill to safeguard drivers like those terminated by DPD. He condemned penalizing workers for challenging unfavorable changes to their working conditions as unacceptable and should be illegal.

In response, a Department for Business and Trade spokesperson emphasized the importance of respectful treatment of employees by all companies but refrained from commenting on specific cases. DPD defended its actions by stating they reserve the right to act against suppliers who breach contracts or harm the company’s interests or reputation.
