“Hurricanes Polo and Nolo Pose Threats to Mexico and Hawaii”

Published on

Hurricane Polo threatened Mexico’s Baja California Sur with strong winds and flooding as it approached the northern Pacific coast on Monday, causing water to inundate some streets. Meanwhile, Hurricane Nolo posed a risk of heavy rainfall to parts of Hawaii as it moved away from the state.

In Puerto San Carlos, Mexico, a town with around 5,700 residents, the impact of Polo was already evident, with high tides and fierce waves breaching sea defenses. Concerned about potential damage to their homes, hundreds of people in the area evacuated to shelters in schools and other facilities.

With sustained winds of 185 km/h, Polo intensified into a Category 3 storm, expected to bring 15 to 30 centimeters of rain to parts of Baja California Sur. The storm was forecasted to make landfall on the Mexican mainland after affecting the region with heavy rains, posing threats of life-threatening winds and flash floods.

Authorities in Sonora, Mexico, announced the suspension of non-essential activities, including school and sports, in preparation for the hurricane’s arrival. In Baja California Sur, residents like Margarita Bobadilla sought refuge in shelters, prioritizing safety over material possessions.

As the storm approached, Mexico’s Civil Protection Agency coordinated relief efforts, deploying personnel and aid to coastal communities. Residents were advised to seek shelter and avoid unnecessary travel, with ports expected to close in anticipation of the hurricane.

In Hawaii, Hurricane Nolo moved away from the Big Island after causing flooding in south and southeastern areas. The storm prompted highway closures due to rushing water and debris, with the Hawaii National Guard conducting rescue operations to assist affected individuals.

While damage assessments were ongoing, Nolo was projected to impact the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, potentially bringing hazardous conditions to the area. Power outages affected thousands of households and businesses on Maui, with most services restored by Monday afternoon following storm-related disruptions.

Amidst recovery efforts, Hawaii residents faced a series of natural disasters in the past year, including storms, earthquakes, and previous hurricanes, resulting in significant damages and recovery costs.
