Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, currently ranked at the top, has decided to withdraw from the upcoming U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury that has been troubling him since his victorious performance at Wimbledon. Despite securing his second consecutive title at the All England Club after defeating Alexander Zverev, Sinner opted out of the preparatory hard-court tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati leading up to the U.S. Open.

In a recent statement, the 25-year-old expressed his regret and announced that he will not be participating in the U.S. Open main draw starting on August 30. Sinner shared that despite dedicated efforts from his team and medical staff, he realized during training sessions in Monte Carlo that more time is needed for his right knee to fully recover.

Sinner, who clinched the U.S. Open title in 2024 and was the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in the previous year’s final, has a notable rivalry with Alcaraz dominating men’s tennis in recent years. The two have faced off in the last three Grand Slam finals in 2025, with Alcaraz emerging victorious in the most recent encounter in New York.

This marks the first time Sinner will be missing a Grand Slam tournament since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019. Despite his impressive record this year of 44 wins and 3 losses, including six titles, Sinner faced a setback at the French Open and made a strong comeback at Wimbledon, where he secured his fifth Grand Slam title. Meanwhile, Alcaraz, who has been recovering from a right wrist injury since April, has confirmed his readiness to compete in the upcoming U.S. Open.
