Defence Secretary John Healey has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin after revealing that a Russian spy ship positioned near UK waters has targeted RAF pilots with lasers.
Healey denounced Russia’s “highly risky behavior” and emphasized that the UK has military strategies prepared in case the Yantar ship heads south. This marks the second occasion the vessel has encroached into British waters within the past year to conduct surveillance on vital undersea cables.
During a press briefing at Downing Street, the Defence Secretary disclosed, “Currently, a Russian spy vessel, the Yantar, is situated on the northern fringe of UK waters, having entered broader UK waters in recent weeks. The ship is specifically equipped for gathering intelligence and mapping underwater cables.”
He added, “We have deployed a Royal Navy frigate and RAF aircraft to closely monitor the movements of this vessel. Alarmingly, the Yantar directed lasers at our pilots during the surveillance. Such actions by Russia pose a significant threat, as this is the ship’s second venture into UK waters this year.”
In a direct message to Russia and Putin, Healey stated, “We are fully aware of your activities, and if the Yantar ventures southward this week, we are prepared to act.”
The warning follows a report from a key Commons committee highlighting the UK’s lack of a comprehensive defense plan against military aggression. Healey pledged to enhance Britain’s preparedness by identifying at least 13 potential locations for new weapons facilities.
The Yantar forms part of Russia’s naval fleet focused on targeting critical undersea cables connecting the UK and Europe, essential for civilian and military communications, as well as energy distribution.
Describing the Yantar’s capabilities, Healey noted, “The vessel is equipped for surveillance during peacetime and sabotage during conflicts.” When questioned about the use of lasers against pilots, he responded, “This is the first instance of such action by the Yantar against the British RAF, and we are taking it very seriously.”
Healey emphasized the need for increased defense measures in response to a “new era of hard power,” cautioning that global threats are evolving rapidly. He underscored the importance of a proactive defense strategy, robust alliances, and effective diplomacy in the face of growing challenges.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Budget announcement, Healey assured that there will be no regression in the strength of the UK’s armed forces.
