A judge has decided to allow the release of previously hidden grand jury transcripts related to the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case.
US District Judge Richard M. Berman, along with two other judges, has granted the Department of Justice’s (DoJ) request to unseal documents from the 2019 federal investigation into the deceased sex offender. This decision overturns his earlier choice to keep the materials confidential, citing the recently enacted Epstein Files Transparency Act, which mandates the DoJ to disclose all Epstein-related files by December 19. Judge Berman supported the motion while emphasizing the “clear right of Epstein victims to safeguard their identity and privacy.”
Initially, the judge had described the approximately 70 pages of grand jury materials as not particularly revealing. Nevertheless, individuals who were victims of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell advocated for the unsealing of the files while ensuring their identities and privacy were protected.
Additional court records disclosed in January 2024 included mentions of figures like former prince Andrew, former US president Bill Clinton, and current US President Donald Trump, although much of this information was already public knowledge. Epstein passed away in a New York prison cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges.
Judge Berman’s ruling follows closely after another judge authorized the public release of grand jury materials from Maxwell’s sex trafficking inquiry. Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 for her involvement in enabling Epstein’s misconduct, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.
Recent reports indicate that Democrats on the House Oversight Committee unveiled images of Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands earlier this month, describing them as offering “a disturbing glimpse into Epstein’s secluded world.”
