Glenn McGrath Dropped as Commentator Due to Betting Company Affiliation

Published on

Glenn McGrath, a renowned Australian cricket icon, has been removed from his role as a commentator by host broadcaster ABC due to his association with a betting company. McGrath, considered one of the best fast bowlers in history, has been a prominent figure during recent Ashes events.

The 55-year-old, who claimed 563 wickets in 124 Test matches for Australia, was a formidable force against England in the Ashes series. Having triumphed in six Ashes campaigns with Australia, McGrath will be in attendance at the opening Test in Perth this Friday.

Although he will continue his involvement with BBC Test Match Special, McGrath will no longer serve as a pundit and commentator for ABC. Despite being featured in promotional material for ABC’s coverage of the series, he was dropped just before the commencement of the Ashes.

In a statement to The Guardian, ABC announced the mutual parting of ways with McGrath for the Ashes series, expressing optimism about potential future collaborations. The decision was prompted by McGrath’s upcoming collaboration with the betting giant Bet365, following a similar action taken against former Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson in the past.

McGrath will maintain a significant presence in the BBC’s Ashes coverage, contributing to live radio commentary and highlight programs alongside a lineup including Jonathan Agnew, Michael Vaughan, Simon Mann, Phil Tufnell, Alex Hartley, and Jim Maxwell. McGrath has boldly predicted a 5-0 victory for the home team in the upcoming series, citing the formidable Australian bowling lineup and England’s historical struggles in Australian conditions.
