UK Braces for Snow After Floods, Arctic Blast

Published on

A significant snowfall is expected in the UK this week following recent flooding. The snow is anticipated to start today and intensify in the coming days, as stated by Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services. Concurrently, an Arctic blast is predicted, with temperatures potentially dropping to -10C.

The majority of the snowfall is forecasted for Scotland, but there is a possibility of it reaching northern England by the week’s end. Edinburgh may experience up to 7cm of snow in a three-hour period on Tuesday morning.

Jim Dale mentioned, “After Storm Claudia, the next weather event will bring widespread ice and snow to the north.” He projected temperatures as low as -10C in the Scottish glens, but the exact areas and amounts of snow remain uncertain.

Snowfall is expected to begin over the Grampians and extend to low-lying areas in Scotland by Tuesday morning, moving southwards by Wednesday. However, the Midlands and South are unlikely to see snow.

The Met Office also anticipates snowfall in the UK due to cold air from high pressure affecting Scotland. Additionally, there is a warning of significant wind chill following a period of unusually warm weather.

Dan Holley, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, stated, “As Storm Claudia moves away, cold air from the Arctic will bring much colder conditions across the UK, potentially leading to wintry hazards like snow and ice.”

Frosts are expected nationwide, with temperatures dropping as low as -7C in some areas next week, and daytime temperatures remaining in single digits. A notable change in weather is anticipated after a prolonged period of above-average temperatures, with possible snow and ice warnings.

Ventusky weather maps indicate possible snow in North Wales and the north-east coast of England on Wednesday. Southern England is expected to experience heavy frost and freezing temperatures, with London reaching -7C on Friday morning, while northern Scotland could drop to -12C.
