“Forgotten Island” Shines as First Hollywood Film Highlighting Filipino Culture

Filipino-Canadian Tricia Serdon, based in Toronto, had always yearned to see a Disney princess resembling her in the movies but had never found one until the release of “Forgotten Island.” The film, a production of Dreamworks Animation that debuted on Sept. 25, stands out as the first major Hollywood animated feature highlighting Filipino culture and mythology. It tells the tale of childhood friends, Jo and Raissa, whose paths diverge when Raissa leaves the Philippines for college in the U.S., while Jo remains in their homeland.

The fantasy world of Nakali, where the friends reunite, is populated with supernatural beings drawn from centuries-old Philippine folklore. Creatures like the manananggal, a vampiric being that flies at night by detaching its upper body, and the kapre, a giant with a dark, bearded appearance living in the forest, come to life on screen. Serdon, who hails from the Philippines, found the portrayal of these creatures deeply personal and impressive in its accuracy.

Co-directors Januel Mercado and Joel Crawford aimed to spotlight Filipino culture through this film, using mythical creatures as metaphors for emotional struggles faced by the characters. The weredog, symbolizing the uncertainty of adolescence and the quest for identity, exemplifies this approach. Despite only scratching the surface of the Philippines’ vast folklore, the filmmakers prioritize storytelling over spectacle, hoping to inspire audiences to explore more Filipino narratives.

Apart from the magical elements, the film captures the essence of Filipino family life, showcasing scenes of gatherings with karaoke, jokes, and plenty of food. Viewers appreciate this portrayal of Filipino culture that emphasizes humor, music, and cuisine rather than focusing solely on hardships. Serdon, moved by the film’s depiction of family dynamics and friendship, believes in its ability to resonate universally through its cultural authenticity.

In a bid for authentic representation, the film’s voice cast boasts a lineup of Filipino talent, including renowned figures like H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Lea Salonga, and Jo Koy. The commitment to representation goes beyond the cast, with Manila-based Snipple Animation contributing to the 2D-animated flashbacks. The filmmakers aim to encourage Filipino creators to share their interpretations with global audiences, fostering a diverse storytelling landscape.

Reflecting on her childhood desire for a Disney princess resembling her, Serdon hopes the next generation of Filipino children won’t have to search as hard for representation in media. “Forgotten Island” sets the stage for more diverse Filipino stories to be told without delay, offering a glimpse of a future where Filipino audiences see themselves authentically portrayed on screen.
