Sabrina and Junior Hunt were surprised during their trip to their cabin on Shabougamou Lake in Labrador West when they encountered a rare muskox. Initially mistaking it for a pile of wood, the couple soon realized the large, black figure was actually a muskox moving along the shoreline.
Captured on video by Junior Hunt, the muskox was seen leisurely strolling as the couple approached in their boat. Sabrina described the majestic sight, noting how the muskox’s fur swayed like a magical grass skirt as it nonchalantly wandered around.
While muskox are typically found in Arctic tundra, sightings in Labrador are uncommon. The Hunts speculated that the muskox may have migrated from herds in northern Quebec. The Department of Forestry, Agriculture, and Lands expressed surprise at the sighting, emphasizing its rarity and the extension of the animal’s known range.
This unique encounter showcases the beauty of wildlife in Labrador West, offering a glimpse into the diverse fauna of the region.
