“Canada Races to Develop Own Rocket Amid SpaceX Concerns”

Published on

Canada, the only G7 nation without its own launch capabilities, is striving to establish a Canadian-made rocket. Several Canadian companies are in a race to provide the country with its own route to space, while concerns arise among some SpaceX clients about potential reduced access to orbit rides. These rocket firms face the challenge of meeting demanding deadlines and adapting to shifting government priorities, complicating the journey to space.

Due to Canada’s lack of rocket launch capabilities, customers in the country rely on external entities, often American ones like SpaceX, to deploy their satellites into orbit. These satellites play a crucial role in various sectors such as telecommunications, military applications like threat detection, and earth observation activities like wildfire monitoring, as noted by Marc Boucher, the founder of SpaceQ, a Canadian space publication. The fear is that without controlling its launches, Canada could face challenges in getting its technology launched by foreign entities.

In a move to assert its sovereignty, the Canadian government has designated space as a crucial sovereign capability in its Defense Industrial Strategy. In April, legislation was introduced that would enable the authorization of launches from Canadian soil if passed. Notably, substantial funding has been allocated, including $8.3 million for each of three Canadian companies striving to achieve light-lift rocket capabilities by 2028.

Among these companies is NordSpace, founded in 2022, focusing on satellite and space technology development. Despite facing setbacks in its first suborbital rocket test launch in 2025, NordSpace plans to make another attempt soon. Reaction Dynamics, another participant, has been diligently working on a unique engine design since 2017, with both companies aiming to reach orbit by 2028 in alignment with government targets.

Canada Rocket Company, the latest entrant, aims to construct a medium-lift rocket powered by nine methalox-fueled engines. With a vision to launch dozens of satellites into low Earth orbit simultaneously, the company is making significant progress, having secured private and government investments, with plans to launch in 2032.

As SpaceX transitions to its Starship rocket, concerns arise among satellite customers reliant on the Falcon 9 rocket for space access. This shift could impact smaller players utilizing SpaceX’s rideshare program, potentially limiting their access to space. Canadian satellite communications company Kepler, for instance, heavily relies on the Falcon 9 for its satellite launches.

With the evolving landscape in the space industry, emerging rocket makers like Canada Rocket Company aspire to capture market opportunities left by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 phaseout. The need for a Canadian rocket manufacturer is emphasized, with the potential to fill the void left by SpaceX’s transition to larger vessels.

Despite the positive developments in the Canadian space industry, challenges remain, including the need for substantial funding to establish reliable rocket launches from Canada. The long-term nature of this endeavor requires sustained investment and commitment from both private and public sectors, with success likely to take several years to achieve regular launches from Canada.
