The internationally renowned calypso artist known as The Mighty Sparrow, credited with popularizing the genre globally from the 1950s onwards, has passed away at the age of 91. The artist, born Slinger Francisco, peacefully departed in New York, surrounded by loved ones, following a short period of illness, as confirmed by his family. Recognized for his prowess as a singer, songwriter, and mentor, The Mighty Sparrow was a revered figure in the entertainment industry.

Originally hailing from Grand Roy, Grenada, The Mighty Sparrow relocated to Trinidad and Tobago with his family at a young age in 1937. Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of calypso music, served as the fertile ground for The Mighty Sparrow’s illustrious career, which produced a string of hits in the genre, including iconic tracks like “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.”

Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad Bissessar, lauded The Mighty Sparrow for carrying the spirit and narratives of the nation across the globe through his music. The country honored the artist with national accolades, including an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies in 1987. Leaders from various Caribbean nations, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica, paid tribute to The Mighty Sparrow, acknowledging his significant contribution to regional culture.

Over his six-decade career, The Mighty Sparrow recorded a vast catalog of songs and performed in numerous countries worldwide, gracing prestigious venues such as New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Apart from his party anthems synonymous with Caribbean carnival culture, The Mighty Sparrow also delved into topical and political themes in songs like “Model Nation,” commemorating Trinidad and Tobago’s independence, “Martin Luther King For President,” and “Kennedy and Kruschev,” reflecting on Cold War-era leaders.

The artist’s legacy extends beyond his music, as he played a pivotal role in advancing the calypso art form, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. Rudolph Ottley, a Trinidadian cultural historian, described The Mighty Sparrow as a cultural revolutionary and one of the foremost calypsonians globally.
