Brooke Henderson is in pursuit of her third victory at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room to climb after shooting a 68 in the second round. The defending champion from Smiths Falls, Ontario, is currently 5-under par, trailing leader Soo Bin Joo of South Korea by four strokes at 9 under on the course at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Despite reaching 7 under, Henderson’s momentum was disrupted by two late bogeys, one of which accidentally hit a spectator with her tee shot. Henderson promptly apologized and offered the spectator a golf ball as a gesture of goodwill.
Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, who was the top amateur in the tournament last year, finished her round strongly with consecutive birdies, carding a 67 to reach 3 under. The cut line for the $2.75-million US event will include the top 65 players and ties. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, both started the day at 5 under and had afternoon tee times as they aimed to make their mark in the competition.
