A British woman, Sonia Exelby, 32, from Portsmouth, was reportedly murdered after traveling to the United States with the alleged intention of being killed by a man she met on an online fetish platform. Exelby arrived at Florida’s Gainesville Regional Airport on October 10 but did not return for her scheduled flight back to the UK three days later. Her body was discovered in a shallow grave in a wooded area in Marion County, located northwest of Orlando, approximately one week after her arrival in Florida.
Concerns arose when a friend of Sonia Exelby made a public appeal for her safe return, expressing worries that she had placed herself in a precarious situation. The friend, through an Instagram post, highlighted Sonia’s vulnerability and mental health struggles, indicating that she had boarded a plane from the UK to Tallahassee, Florida, and might have arranged to meet someone there, leading to the concerning circumstances.
British authorities, suspecting that Sonia was living with a mental health condition and was suicidal, sought assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement via INTERPOL. Investigations led to the belief that Sonia had traveled to Florida with the purpose of meeting a man who allegedly intended to harm her. Subsequently, Dwain Hall, 53, was arrested after authorities linked him to transactions made using Sonia’s credit cards.
Law enforcement officials claimed that Hall picked up Sonia from the airport and took her to an Airbnb in Reddick. Initially providing conflicting accounts, Hall eventually disclosed to authorities that he had first connected with Sonia on a fetish website two years prior. Hall purportedly asserted that Sonia expressed suicidal tendencies and a desire to be killed, with him positioning himself as a mentor rather than a perpetrator of harm, as indicated in an arrest report obtained from TV20.
Hall allegedly acknowledged having inclinations toward violence and admitted to engaging in sexual activities with Sonia multiple times, claiming to have deleted videos taken during these encounters. Police footage reportedly depicted Sonia with bruises, with Hall questioning her presence and pressuring her to agree to inflict harm upon herself.
Analysis of a message sent by Sonia to a friend on an online platform on October 11, along with subsequent communications, revealed Sonia’s growing apprehension and realization of being in a coercive situation controlled by Hall. Expressing sentiments of regret and desperation during her stay at the Airbnb, Sonia hinted at feeling trapped and manipulated by Hall’s threats, ultimately culminating in her tragic demise.
Following the discovery of a body in the woods of Marion County with fingerprints matching Sonia’s, forensic evidence, including Sonia’s DNA found on a shovel in Hall’s possession, further corroborated the unfolding events. An autopsy confirmed that Sonia had succumbed to multiple stab wounds inflicted by a knife. Additionally, investigations revealed that Hall had dispatched a package to an acquaintance in Ohio post-Sonia’s demise, leading to the recovery of a knife believed to be linked to the crime, stained with blood and suspected to contain Sonia’s DNA.
Dwain Hall faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, credit card fraud, and unlawful use of a communication device in connection with Sonia Exelby’s tragic and untimely death.
