Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has generously contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library following the news that five branches were at risk of permanent closure. Reid expressed her motivation for the donation, stating that as a successful author in Nova Scotia, she felt compelled to support a good cause.

The Annapolis Valley Regional Library recently utilized $80,000 from its reserve funds to keep the five branches open until the end of September. However, additional funding was required to sustain the libraries in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton until the 2026-27 fiscal year. Rachel Reid’s donation ensures the continued operation of these branches through the specified period.

Library CEO Julia Merritt acknowledged the significance of Reid’s contribution, emphasizing its impact on sustaining the branches. The funds will primarily be allocated towards staffing costs, supporting the essential services provided by the libraries.

Reid, known for the popular “Heated Rivalry” series, highlighted the pivotal role libraries played in her journey as an author. She emphasized the importance of adequately funding libraries, underscoring their broader impact on communities beyond offering books and magazines.
