Alberta Premier Urges Diplomacy in Trade Dispute

Published on

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to sway U.S. lawmakers and citizens on the damaging effects of the ongoing trade dispute between Canada and the U.S. During a news conference in Grande Prairie, Alta., Smith urged for a more Canadian approach of being friendly, kind, and helpful in order to influence the U.S. administration’s tariff strategies.

Smith highlighted the need for pressure from governors, members of the U.S. congress, and the American public to change the stance of President Donald Trump’s administration towards tariffs. She emphasized that Canada’s victory in this trade conflict would not come through force but rather through strategic thinking, agility, and leveraging the strong relationship with the American people to reverse the tariffs imposed.

In response to suggestions of using Canadian oil and gas as a bargaining tool in the trade war, Smith firmly opposed the idea, warning about the severe consequences it could have on both the Canadian and U.S. economies. She cautioned against the potential impact of imposing counter-tariffs on oil, particularly highlighting the negative effects it could have on Eastern Canada’s fuel supply and economy.

Smith expressed concerns about the possible long-term ramifications of using energy resources as leverage in trade negotiations, emphasizing the potential loss of the U.S. as a customer for Canadian oil. She warned that such actions could lead to job losses, fuel shortages, and economic instability, affecting various sectors including aviation and stock markets.

The premier stressed the importance of finding alternative approaches to international trade and emphasized the need to focus on reducing internal trade barriers within Canada. She called for expedited approval processes for infrastructure projects such as pipelines, and advocated for taxation changes to encourage investment within the country.

Smith announced the formation of a new tariffs cabinet committee to address the province’s response to the trade situation, seeking input from businesses through an online portal and assembling a business advisory committee. Additionally, she supported Saskatchewan’s decision to impose a tax on U.S. alcohol products as a counter-tariff measure.

Political analysts noted Smith’s efforts to position herself within the framework of national interests amid the trade tensions. They highlighted her attempts to address concerns about loyalty to Canada while defending Alberta’s economic interests. Smith reiterated her commitment to holding a provincial referendum and called for the federal government to resume negotiations with the U.S. to avoid escalating tariffs on U.S. goods.
