“Canadian director Matt Johnson explores the early life of Anthony Bourdain in new biopic ‘Tony'”

Published on

Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared relaxed last week as he approached a discussion with CBC News about his upcoming movie, “Tony,” a biopic focusing on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s posthumous fame following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed ease in portraying his story, mentioning his initial detachment from Bourdain’s persona and reputation.

Initially not planning to make a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective changed after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. Sessa’s relatability to the character’s struggles led Johnson to explore themes of role models and adulthood, sparking the collaboration between the two on the project.

The film, drawing inspiration from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” condenses stories from his youth into a narrative set during a summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain began his career as a chef. By focusing on the younger Bourdain, Johnson aimed to sidestep the pressure of portraying the mature Bourdain and instead delve into the complexities of his formative years.

“Tony” delves into Bourdain’s personal challenges and relationships, offering a fresh perspective on his life that resonates with audiences. Johnson emphasized the collaborative effort between himself, Sessa, and the spirit of Bourdain, aiming to deliver a compelling and relatable portrayal of the iconic chef.

Scheduled for screening in Canadian theaters on August 14, “Tony” promises to offer viewers a unique insight into the early life of Anthony Bourdain through the lens of director Matt Johnson’s creative vision.
